Non-Ski Activities
If a skier wants a break from the slopes for a day or for the non-skier destination traveler, we are planning three excursions with lots of options. At the moment these activities are still in the planning stages but will likely include:
· Saas-Fee – Take the cable car up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. At 12,780 feet, it’s the highest mountain lift station with revolving restaurant In Europe. Down inside the glacier is Glacier Palace where there is a walkway carved through the ice and filled with ice sculptures, an ice throne and slide. New since 2016 is an exciting simulated avalanche experience. Another activity is sledding down one of the longest runs in Switzerland – 7 miles! For the most adventurous ones, there is a guided mountain tour along a gorge with frozen waterfalls that takes you across suspension bridges, ladders and steel ropes and a zip-line.
· Leukerbad – The largest thermal spa in the Alps with 32 pools and various spa facilities. This location also has a cable car ride up to a panoramic restaurant. Before going to the spa you may want to go snowshoeing or do another sled ride – much shorter than the one at Saas Fee. Or if you want to do another challenging winter hike, there is the famous 25-mile, 4-hour Gemini hike.
· Brig –the cultural hub of the region. The visit includes a city tour and a guided tour of the 17thcentury Stockalper Palace. If you didn’t go to the Leukerbad spa, instead of the tours you can go into thermal baths here as well.
· Castles and wine tasting - always popular. This one is in the Valais region. More castle info to come but the wines are known. In this area Pinot Noir and Gamay are the favored reds. Switzerland's favorite white grape, Chasselas (Fendant) is also found here.

There is also the option to explore the nearby area on your own as the train station is right in town and services the area with frequent departures. And of course you should save some time to enjoy your own backyard. The Bahnhofstrasse is Zermatt’s main street and it’s a delight to walk along it day or night with its bars, restaurants, boutiques, souvenir shops, bakeries and more. Of course the Swiss chocolates must be tried! Did you know that the triangular shape and the logo of the Toblerone chocolate candy were inspired by the Matterhorn?
Excursions:
Sion - Monday 1/21/2019 $135
2-hour guided tour in Sion
Old town of Sion including a visit of the Tour des Sorciers, Maison Supersaxo, Roman, thermal baths,...
Last vestige of the ancient ramparts that surrounded the city of Sion, the Tour des Sorciers was a defense tower at the northwest corner of one of the walls, built in the 14th century. At first it had a flat roof then it was transformed into a prison and topped with a roof in the second half of the 16th century (1753). During the reorganization of the prisons, one adds to the original tower, a turret of staircase as well as an appendix including the new corridors. In addition to the dungeons, there is also a torture room.
After the Revolution, the tower was no longer used as a prison. It survived the demolition of the
ramparts and was classified as a historical monument.
Its name refers to witchcraft trials that took place between the 15th and 18th century.
Maison Supersaxo, this grand old home, tucked into a passageway off Rue Supersaxo, was built in
1505 by Georges Supersaxo, the local governor, to put his rivals to shame. This extravagantly decorated building includes a Gothic staircase and grand hall, whose painted wood ceiling is a dazzling work of decorative art.
