The Amalfi coast is a region of great natural beauty and cultural heritage on the southern coast of Italy.  It has a long and rich history that dates back to ancient times.  It was colonized by the Greeks and Romans, who left traces of their presence in villas and ruins.  It also inspired legends and myths, such as the ones related to the sirens and Orpheus.  During the 10th-11th centuries, the Duchy of Amalfi existed on the territory of the Amalfi Coast, centered in the town of Amalfi.   The Amalfi Coast was later controlled by the Principality of Salerno, until it was sacked by the Republic of Pisa in 1137.  There are a number of towns such as Amalfi and Ravello with architectural and artistic works of great significance.  The Amalfi coast is now a popular tourist destination and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
